Langata Women’s Prison, May 14th, 2008, Celebrating the Opening of New Projects Initiated by Faraja Trust

Opening Speech by Kalonzo

Extracts of the Opening Speech by the Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, in the Court Yard of Langata Women’s Prison:

How are you?

The women: We are fine!

It is wonderful to discover that when in jail, one can still be fine. Usually, even when one is very ill, and is asked how he is doing, the reply is still that they are fine. We can clearly see that you are all well. We are all very glad to be here today.

I am continuing the process which my predecessor, Uncle Moody Awori began. We are very happy with the environment of Langata Women’s Prison. Our aim is to make sure that all the good we have seen here today is spread all over the country. …

I am accompanied by sponsors like Fr. Peter whom I want to thank for all the work he has done here. He is a servant of God who has brought a Christian message to you. When you are here, reflect on your relationship with God. Maybe God sent you here so that you can have a break. After the break he may even bless you more. …

We shall now go on with the programme of the day. Put God first in all you do. That you are in jail does not mean you lose your basic rights as a human being. We have to ensure that those rights are observed, and that we as the Kenyan society do not forget those who are in prison.

We shall be back. Thank you.
